solution to crappy corporate retention policies that enforce removal of mail to to some arcane storage system like evault or worse

if you are using sharepoint WSS3 or MOSS you can email directly to a folder on the sharepoint site – including attachments, either stripping them off and saving them only, saving just the email or both.
Thus you can either create rules in outlook that email every in coming mail or only certain emails to one or more sharepoint folders – thus you dont need to care about the corporate retention archive. Sharepoint is also searchable.

the best solution is to create your own pst files and archive locally (manually if you have to) but some corporates create group policy restricting the creation of pst files
